First off, thank you to everyone who contributed to 105.1 JACK FM's Feed The Children campaign on Thursday. Thanks to your generosity we raised over $76,000 for Operation Breakthrough and hungry children in Kansas City!
Thanks to all of those who called in or e-mailed and were able to share what they could even though gas prices suck and bills are getting more and more out of control for our own families.

What is something you can't do that you wish you could, if only for the reason that you feel like you should know how to do this particular thing?
For me it's drive a stick shift. I can't do it! People have tried for years to get me to drive a stick shift to no avail. I'm such a nerd that I've even gone online to readabout how to operate a manual transmission and that has not helped. Yet I consider what would happen if my friend were incapacitated and the only way to get to a hospital would be to drive their stick shift car. What would I do then?
This morning's callers echoed my sentiments in other areas of life. One caller wished she could whistle while another wished he could speak better English.
Yes, what you've been hearing on the radio from Nine Finger Charlie is indeed true...last Thursday night, Media Mix of Kansas City held their annual awards banquet at the Intercontinental Hotel on the Plaza.
Media Mix is made up of the advertising, print, radio and TV industries and holds this banquet to honor managers and personalities in their respective fields.
It was, then, a big honor to accept from my peers the award for "Radio Personality of the Year" at last week's banquet. Thank you to Jon and Steve-O, to our Promotions Director Jamie Cox, our managers Pat Gibbs, Maurice DeVoe and Donna Baker, and to you - our loyal listeners - because without listeners radio wouldn't exist in the first place. And there to satisfy Charlie is a picture of my beautiful award.

Last week the Kansas City Wizards invited me to play in their annual Media Game during halftime of the Wizards/New York Redbulls game on July 10th. Now, it may be true that I bragged a bit about my soccer prowess, seeing as I had about 9 years of playing under my belt.
On Wednesday the Wizards allowed me to come to their beautiful practice facility in Swope Park to work out some of the kinks that inherently set in after, oh...say, 15 years of not kicking a soccer ball. They never could've prepared for what was to happen.
Yes, you may have heard me talking on JACK's Big Breakfast about the damage, which was mostly to Kerry Zavagnin's face. See it in the VIDEO BLOG for yourself:
Many thanks to the Wizards for letting a rank amateur invade their space. How about another practice next week guys?
This morning's Eight Tracks began as a challenge. Bob called me on Monday and said he dreamed up a great theme: songs where the title is never mentioned in the actual lyrics. He could only think of one song to back up his theme, though: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. Never one to back down from a challenge I put the crack Research Department to work and spit out today's list.

I hope everyone had a great Father's Day weekend! This great guy to the right is my grandpa, Art, whose name I carry as my middle name (yes, Bryan Arthur Truta..my initials are BAT thankyouverymuch).
I was very lucky to be able to spend some time with the family this weekend as we celebrated Father's Day (Callie the cat was also excited to have us around!).
Right before all of this weekend's festivities were to begin, I got notice that one of my favorite journalists and political analysts had passed away. I think it's safe to say that a world of people who are news or political junkies (as myself and my mother are) were shocked and saddened by the all-too-early death of NBC's Tim Russert.
Russert defined political reporting as far as I was concerned. His skill in interviewing a subject and getting to the meat, the truth, was unparalleled. You never turned off his program, Meet The Press, going "Tim, why didn't you ask about ___?" He knew the questions that the "everyman" would want him to ask of our political leaders (or prospective leaders) and he asked them unashamedly.
On the analysis side, there was no better program to watch on primary nights or Election nights than anything with Tim Russert on. In a day when the electronic media demands that the line between hard journalism and subjective analysis becomes more and more blurry, Russert stood out as the critic with a heart. Tough and unweilding, but always fair, Russert understood that crossing the line into a more conversational approach to reporting also meant that TV figures needed to move away from being just a "talking head" and - to crib a writing term - become more dimensional characters.
Russert's appearances on shows like Imus, Hardball, or Countdown, and his own personal asides on MTPmade it very clear that Tim Russert the person was just like Tim Russert the journalist: curious, funny, outspoken, and genuine. There will surely be many more people than just Mom and I who will miss Tim Russert, but TV journalism (and journalism in general) are better for having him here, no matter how short that time was.
On a tangent, I got a chance to attend my first Wizards game this weekend at Community America Ballpark. Wow! The crowd was a sell-out of over 10,000, the weather was perfect, and while Kansas City didn't win I did get to cheer on my boy Kerry Zavagnin, a great friend of JACK's Big Breakfast.
If you listen to the show, you know that the Wizards have asked me to play in the annual Media Game at halftime of the July 10th game. I have set it up already that Kerry is going to give me some pointers after practice this week. Don't worry, we will be recording it for the video blog and it will be posted here first!

Today was not just the Big Breakfast's early celebration of Father's Day but Friday the 13th! Oooh, scary! One caller we had today actually has more lucky things happen to her on Friday the 13th than any other day. On this, the creepiest of dates, she's actually gotten a promotion, won money in a lottery, and had other assorted good luck things happen.
If only I were that lucky!
This morning's Eight Tracks had nothing to do with luck, it was all about dear ol' Dad. Peppered with funny commentary on fathers from Chris Rock and Bob Hope (opposite ends of the comedic scale represented here!), I present our Father's Day list.

Today in JACK's Dilemna, Lisa wrote in asking for help with her 15-year old daughter. The girl wants to date an 18-year old boy she met at church. A single mother of two, Lisa doesn't think this is a good idea, though her husband feels it's OK.
This morning's listeners were unanimous in saying that it wasn't cool and she should not let her daughter continue dating this guy! Tune in at 6:20a for another dilemna tomorrow morning!

As I told you this morning there are almost literally a thousand different JACKtivities options this weekend...from the Berry Festival to Old Shawnee Days, Lee's Summit Downtown Days to Wakrusa, Slavic Fest to Festa Italia you should not be clamoring for anything to do! In celebration, JACK's Eight Tracks today was filled with bands performing in concert here just this weekend!

Sheryl has always pretty much been considered a "local girl," having grown up in Kennett, Missouri. As I related on the air, she was once a music teacher to make extra money and taught my college friend Angie in that subject.
Over the course of her career Sheryl has always had an affinity for covering songs. She has done a lot of these for movie soundtracks or just performed them in concert. We found eight of them for the the Eight Tracks.

1. Beatles "Here Comes The Sun" 2. Guns N' Roses "Sweet Child O' Mine" 3. Rolling Stones "Get Off My Cloud" 4. Cat Stevens "The First Cut Is The Deepest" (and a little Rod Stewart, too) 5. Fleetwood Mac "Landslide" 6. Jeff Buckley "Hallelujah" * 7. Led Zeppelin "D'yer Mak'er" 8. Bobbie Gentry "Ode To Billie Joe"
* - This was actually the only non-original version of a song played. Jeff Buckley covered Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in 1992 and it became big when he drowned and died at a young age. Then, in March of 2008 it became huge again when Jason Castro sang it on American Idol. For the week of March 22, 2008 Jeff Buckley's version became the #1 song on the Billboard Digital Songs chart and the most downloaded song on iTunes. Most music fans consider this to be the definitive version of the song. No offense to Leonard. ")
OK, it's official - the Big Breakfast $5 is going to be spent at the casino... Now I just have to figure out how to get it there and which one!
You can see the bill to the right. I got it over the weekend and it was stamped with the website WheresGeorge.com. I put the serial number of the bill into the site and found out it has also been in Moorseville, North Carolina.
Now, thanks to your suggestions I am going to take it to the boats and see if we can't get someone else to track it on the website and we'll follow where it goes!
Stay tuned as we follow the Big Breakfast $5.
Did you catch the election coverage last night? Senator Barack Obama became the presumptive Democatic nominee for President of the United States of America, while Hillary Clinton made a fiery, eloquent speech. What great television! It was almost like a sporting event - real human drama unfolding before our eyes.
Every four years the Presidential election is like my Super Bowl and this year's version will be no different. Expect me to be up with a tub of popcorn and a lot of caffeine for this year's Election Day!!!
In the meantime, notice how everyone is preaching change; change is ringing out for those striving for Capitol Hill on everything from war policy to gas prices, health care and everything in between. Thanks to this call for "change" today's Eight Tracks were all about the c-word.

If someone else has already put that number into their database it will add your name and location to the list of people who have handled that particular bill and make a map of where it's been you can literally follow your bill around the country!
Turns out my bill used to be in Mooresville, North Carolina. Now I am very interested in tracking this to see where it goes next...listen Wednesday at 7:10a as we discuss the next step in getting this bill into circulation and following it around the world!
