Happy Back To Work Day!

OK, so it's not quite officially called that, but if you're back at work, Happy Tuesday nonetheless. Did you end up going out of town over the holiday? It seems as if most people said they weren't, hampered by high gas prices and bad weather. Yet it still felt as if the place emptied out over the weekend. I always joke that you can run around naked and pretty much do what you want in Kansas City during 3-day holidays, everyone is that enamored by the lake.

I, on the other hand, think lakes are dirty and prefer to kick around town at my own leisure during those periods.

Listener Paul threw down a challenge for JACK's Eight Tracks today:

Truta,

I heard Kid Rock's new song (ed. note: "All Summer Long" - hear it on JACK FM!) as he references "Sweet Home Alabama."

Can you do [an Eight Tracks] about songs that reference other songs?

Is there a prize or reward? Coldplay tickets would work.

Paul Eide

Well, Paul, as I mentioned this morning, the true award-earners would be the crack Eight Tracks research staff, who thanked me this morning that they had a three day weekend to come up with the songs for this list, but they did it. See the fruits of their labors (and other lists) below:

Catching Up

Wow, has it really been that long since we talked? Yes it has, and it's all my fault.

When we last talked, Kansas City was still in the throes of a David Cook death grip...this guy seriously has the town in a tizzy! Girls are going nuts and, apparently, so are concert-goers. The American Idols Tour which feature the Top 10 Finalists and was scheduled for August 29th at Sprint Center has now added a second show on August 30th! Yes, David Cook will be on that tour, the rub being that the actual winner of Idol will be the last performer of the evening - the headliner, if you will.

If David doesn't win I expect a walk-out before Archuletta takes the stage. Haha...I'm kidding. Or am I?

Tonight, the Cure is in town to play Starlight Theatre, a pretty good place to see a show. I say pretty good because I dig the smaller, more intimate venue, I love the urban setting (yes, Swope Park can get a little scary after dark but come on people!), and the amenities are top-notch. The downsides include the fact it is a fixed-seat venue.

I think Sandstone had the right idea for this year by ripping out the bottom section of seats and making a huge standing-room only area for shows. I hate it when the Uptown Theatre puts those horrendous folding chairs down for shows, and I get annoyed when a great band comes to Starlight and you just want to party and clash with other people and those plastic chairs get in the way.

Oh well, thanks for letting me vent.

The Cure is one of music's most influential bands, so we focused on that in today's Eight Tracks.

JACK's Eight Tracks Monday, May 19th: Bands That Were Influenced By The Cure

1. Fall Out Boy "Sugar, We're Goin' Down"

David Cook Day

Today is David Cook day in the State of Missouri - and on 105.1 JACK FM!

We were very pleased to bring Kansas City's American Idol back to his hometown and we did it in grand style. David visited the morning show and all I can say is watch the video blog because words cannot describe it!!!

People said there were more preparations made for David's visit than for the President's. There were producers and American Idol camera people and even a reporter from People magazine! They were all crowded into our little JACK FM studio with a camera inches from my face! So all I have to say is "Look out Seacrest!"

Cinco De Stinko

Seems like I'm seeing an awful lot of last night's clothing at work this morning! The unshaven, unkempt masses are piling in to meet their 8:30a work deadline before disappearing off to a "lunch meeting" (aka - a hot shower and wardrobe change).

Happy Day After Cinco de Mayo!

ASSIGNMENT: OK, I'm going to give you a couple of assignments here. Some are for Eight Tracks themes others are for show bits.

EIGHT TRACKS: We've got Graduation coming up. Also, an American Idol theme-day is in the works for David Cook's Homecoming.

BIG BREAKFAST SEGMENTS: A couple of weeks ago Tyra Banks (not that I watch that show) had a panel of men in studio to answer any and all questions from men. If you're a dude and you're willing to join a panel of guys who want to come in studio and take calls from women, e-mail me and let me know. You'll be treated to a fabulous breakfast (probably doughnuts) and a JACK prize pack.

Conversely, we'll have a group of women in studio to do the same thing, so ladies you can sign up as well. Hey, it's your chance to be heard on the radio!

Also, this week you can win $100 to Spa Tuscano for Mother's Day. Here's what you have to do: I'm looking for someone who is willing to call their mother on the air and confess something to her that you've never told her! Call in the 7a hour tomorrow when I tell you and you can win this great prize. Just think, the pain of telling mom something bad will be offset by a great prize!

DAVID COOK HOMECOMING: Join JACK FM as we bring you the sounds of the David Cook Homecoming all day this Friday. First off, David will be IN STUDIO with JACK's Big Breakfast Friday morning at 8:30a! Then, listen in as David takes part in his "homecoming parade" in Blue Springs, followed by an assembly of 10,000 of his closest fans at the Blue Springs South Stadium.

Now, everyone is invited but there are only 10,000 tickets available. Check with Blue Springs High School, Blue Springs South High School, Blue Springs School District Administrative Service Center, or the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce for details. While the tickets are free, they are asking a $5 donation that will be given to the American Cancer Society.

Cinco De Insanity!

Here's to Cinco de Mayo...the unofficial Mexican Day of Independence. People get this holiday confused all of the time and this morning we set the record straight!

Mexican Independence Day is actually September 15th, but Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the Mexican Army's win over Napoleon's French Foreign Legion in 1862. It's day to celebrate liberty and freedom. And, apparently, a day to drink...a lot.

Speaking of wanting to drink, Caroline Rhea visited JACK's Big Breakfast on Friday and here's a few minutes of true insanity in the new VIDEO BLOG:

By the way, did anyone watch the Kentucky Derby this year? If so, you watched Big Brown capture the 134th Run For The Roses, but you also witnessed a true tragedy when Eight Belles, the only Filly in the race, broke two ankles and had to be put down on the track immediately following the race.

What made this girl's story even more touching was the fact that - as the first Filly to run the Derby in years - she held her own amongst the boys and finished in second place. I've been a fan of the Derby and the Triple Crown races in recent years, even if only for the pageantry and spectacle. I have long looked forward to a day of wearing a goofy-ass hat and sipping on mint juleps in the Kentucky sun.

But this story gave me pause.

Barbaro's plight a couple of years ago was as moving as an animal story can get. I did man-cry during the documentary about his brave fight for life and his ultimate demise. The movie Seabiscuit made me choke up. And this story makes me wonder about the "sport" of horse racing. Who ultimately wins and loses here? Something to consider...
