We made it though the weekend! Did you have a good one?
Kudos to my Jayhawks who scrapped and clawed their way to a Final Four with a hard-fought win over Davidson on Sunday. It wasn't pretty but the result was great!
Also, I am SO excited that baseball season is back...the Royals open up on the road against Detroit today. Every year April brings semi-warm weather and the prospect of baseball interest running deep into the summer. Unfortunately we're usually let down, but I like our new GM, Dayton Moore, and the team seems to have some great young talent so we'll see how well we do.
At least on Opening Day everyone's in First Place!
NEW VIDEO BLOG!

Happy Birthday to Ernie, my very favorite person in the world!

We were visited today by Kerry Zavagnin from the Kansas City Wizards soccer club. Kerry came to discuss the home opener this Saturday at 7p at Community America Ballpark in the Legends Shopping Center. Kerry also dished a bit on American Idol and revealed that he is a North Carolina Tar Heels fan. Boo!
Check out Kerry's interview here in the Video Blog:
JACK's Eight Tracks Thursday, March 27th: Running! (with assistance from Lisa Adams!)
1. Slade "Run, Run Away" 2. Tom Petty "Runnin' Down A Dream" 3. Hoobastank "Running Away" 4. A Flock Of Seagulls "I Ran" 5. Van Halen "Running With The Devil" 6. Blues Traveler "Run-Around" 7. Steve Miller Band "Take The Money And Run" 8. Police "When The World Is Running Down"
OK, someone remind me - no more partying on a school night! What the hell was I thinking?
Last night I wrapped up a taping of Harrah's Lucky Break (ed. note: this episode will air Saturday, April 5th at 11p on KMBC Ch 9) and met my friend Nick out for a drink. Nick works for a sports radio station in town and was calling the NAIA Championship game on the radio, so we decided to hit downtown for a cold one.
As is customary, one beer turns into five and the next thing I know it's 1:10am!!! But here I was ready to roll by 6a! Kudos to myself!
Today's show meandered through the stories of the day - who got voted off Dancing With The Stars (Penn Jillette and Monica Seles), the Monica Brown/Spelling Bee fiasco (more on that in a bit), and giving away free stuff.
For today's Top 5 giveaway I threw out a survey that says counting sheep to try and put yourself to sleep is passe. Instead there are about six "new ways" to count yourself to sleep. I asked for someone to name just one of those for Poison tickets. Rich got it right with "money!"
Other answers:
-the number of clothes in your closet -the number of sexual partners you've had
Wait, what??? If you seriously have to think about how many people you've been with how do you have time to sleep? Oh, and if you really got confused there and you're counting the number of sex partners in your closet, then you really have problems!
We talked again about the Monica Brown debacle. Monica is the 12 year old from Platte City who was denied entry into the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee because her school filled out the paperwork wrong. While hundreds of other schools were offered the chance to correct their mistake, Monica's school was not. At the last minute, after much media attention and after Ellen DeGeneres picked up the story for her national talk show, the Bee recanted and allowed Monica entry. Way to go!

NEW VIDEO BLOG - Cherryh Butler from ink magazine.
Welcome to the start of basketball craziness, sports fans! Go Hawks and Go Wildcats! Yes, let's cheer for our local teams!
On this morning's Big Breakfast we were discussing a news story that 13% of High School seniors report being hit on by their teachers. Really? Some callers wondered where the "hot teachers" were when they were young. HA!
This inspired a great Eight Tracks today...
JACK's Eight Tracks Thursday March 20th: Teachers/School
1. Van Halen "Hot For Teacher" 2. Ramones "Rock N Roll High School" 3. Police "Don't Stand So Close To Me" 4. Paul Simon "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard" 5. Winger "Seventeen" 6. Pink Floyd "Happiest Days/Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2" 7. Adam Sandler "Lunchlady Land" 8. .38 Special "Teacher, Teacher"
And by that I mean stuff like "The Bachelor," "Rock Of Love," etc? Trash TV is big around my house and I always fall for things like Dancing With The Stars or - as well documented - Big Brother and its companion, Big Brother After Dark (airing on Showtime Too).
If there is one decent thing on TV, though, that I could persuade you to watch, it's High School Confidential on the WE Network. This great documentary is airing in 8 parts every Monday night (and they do a pretty good job of replaying it) and follows a group of teenage girls who go to Blue Valley Northwest High School.
Great, riveting TV!
JACK's Eight Tracks Wednesday, March 19th: Walking (with help from Sandy Schnack) 1. Bangles "Walk Like An Egyptian" 2. Van Halen "Love Walks In" 3. Smashmouth "Walking On The Sun" 4. Nancy Sinatra "These Boots Were Made For Walkin'" 5. Aerosmith f. Run D.M.C. "Walk This Way" 6. Tegan & Sara "Walking With A Ghost" 7. Was (Not Was) "Walk The Dinosaur" 8. Soul Coughing "Circles"
Remember, you can submit your Eight Tracks list to: btruta@1051jackfm.com. And in case you miss any at 8am, the Eight Tracks segment is replayed in its entirety at 8pm every Monday-Friday.
First off, thanks to everyone who came down and saw us at the Big 12 Miller Lite FanFest. Congrats to my Jayhawks for winning the Big 12 title and good luck in the Big Dance! Everyone get your brackets ready, it's that time again.
Yesterday was one of my favorite holidays: St. Patrick's Day. JACK's Big Breakfast was live at Grinders in the Crossroads Arts District celebrating this day o'green, where we had a good old-fashioned Irish toast (at 8:50am) and was paid a special visit from our friend Cherryh Butler of INK Magazine.
INK was commemorating the launch of their new website, and I invite you to check it out at inkkc.com. Just don't go to their "Pics" page because there are already some horrendous pictures of 'yours truly' and I don't want anyone to see them. I gave Cherryh some crap about that on-air, which you will have to watch in today's Video Blog (below).
Just for St. Patty's Day we also had JACK's Eight Tracks celebrating Drinking Songs: 1. AC/DC "Have A Drink On Me" 2. Jimmy Buffet "Margaritaville" 3. George Thourogood "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer..." 4. Chumbawamba "Tubthumpin'" 5. Amy Winehouse "Rehab" 6. UB40 "Red Red Wine" 7. Eagles "Tequila Sunrise" 8. Semisonic "Closing Time"
Unfortunately, Mother Nature was not very forgiving come parade time as we were completely soaked by the rain! However, we perservered and saw some great fans of the parade and of JACK FM dotting the parade route through downtown.
I think everyone was inspired by the awesome banner that we had celebrating 35+ years of Larry Moore anchoring the 10pm news on KMBC Channel 9. Much thanks to Jim at Sign Pro (kcsignpro.com) for his work on the banner.
All of these events over the weekend made it hard to wake up for Tuesday's Big Breakfast, but there I was. We gave away another great Easter Basket from Town Center Plaza and had a good list of Eight Tracks that was once again "listener inspired."
JACK's Eight Track's Tuesday March 18th: Colors (with help from Monique Scritchfield and Heather Frey)
1. Cyndi Lauper "True Colors" 2. R.E.M. "Orange Crush" 3. Billy Idol "White Wedding" 4. Aerosmith "Pink" 5. Nena "99 Red Balloons" 6. Beatles "Yellow Submarine" 7. Eiffel 65 "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" 8. Squeeze "Black Coffee In Bed" It's VIDEO BLOG time:
This morning we broadcast live from the Big 12 Miller FanFest to celebrate Day 2 of the Big 12 Tournament. If you have a chance, come see us sometime this weekend - we'll be camped out through Sunday in the FanFest tent at 14th and Grand.
In honor of basketball fever and March Madness, the Eight Tracks were all about balls and some jock jams...
JACK Eight Tracks Friday March 14th: Balls / Basketball / Sports
1. Kurtis Blow "Basketball" 2. AC/DC "Big Balls" 3. Technotronic "Pump Up The Jam" 4. Cheech & Chong "Basketball Jones" 5. Black Eyed Peas "Let's Get It Started" 6. Todd Rundgren "Bang On The Drum All Day" 7. David Barrett "One Shining Moment"
Yes, that is the "One Shining Moment" that ends the CBS coverage of the Big Dance every year...it is actually a real song, written by this David Barrett guy after he watched Indana win the 1979 NCAA Championship. CBS originally wanted to use the song for a post-football game montage but the particular game it was supposed to debut in ran long and the director axed the segment for time. The network then asked Barrett if he'd mind changing the first line, "The ball is kicked..." to "The ball is tipped..." and they would use it for basketball instead.
Now, it's become and institution and ranks as one of my "man cry" moments as I love to watch that moving montage at the end of a good championship game. It will be even better this year when KU is hoisting that trophy, but I digress....
VIDEO BLOG - Michael Winslow!
He's the man of unlimited sound effects and voices - using just his mouth. You know him from Police Academy and those Geico commercials... see him at Stanford's Comedy Club this weekend. You can call 913-400-7500 and tell them you heard it on JACK and see about free tickets!!!!
Today's musings included the identity of New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's "madame," 22 year old Ashley Alexandra Dupre (right). Sure, she's pretty smokin' hot...but enough to drop $5,000 an hour??? Not to mention that Governor Spitzer made $179,000 last year but spent nearly $80,000 on hookers!
Guys - when was the last time your wife let you spend $20 without telling her? But half of your salary??? This story keeps getting crazier.
And that leads us to today's Eight Tracks!
JACK's Eight Tracks Thursday March 13th: Insanity! With thanks to Melva Palmer and Shawn Mick for submitting two different lists on the same subject!
1. Ozzy Osbourne "Crazy Train" 2. Fine Young Cannibals "She Drives Me Crazy" 3. Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" 4. Heart "Crazy On You" 5. Seal "Crazy" 6. Madonna "Crazy For You" 7. Queen "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" 8. Aerosmith "Crazy"
Tomorrow I want to do something about basketball or balls in general (ok, laugh now) for the Big 12. E-mail your Eight Tracks to: btruta@1051jackfm.com
This morning we awarded Keith Anderson with passes to meet Sister Hazel before their show Friday night at the KC Live stage. Keith will get to watch their soundcheck and hang out while they do an interview and acoustic set for JACK's Bare Brunch which airs Sunday morning from 8-10a.
We also welcomed back Cherryh Butler from INK Magazineto discuss all that's going on this weekend with Big 12 and St. Patrick's Day.
Here's the videoblog from Cherryh's appearance:
Don't forget to join JACK's Big Breakfast this Friday from 6-9a at the Miller Lite FanFest tent right across from Sprint Center. We're going to broadcast live for the Big 12 and have a great BBQ breakfast catered by Famous Dave's BBQ!!!!!
Today's Eight Tracks were inspired by Heather Frey of Kansas City, who submitted a list of songs about transportation.
JACK's Eight Tracks Wednesday March 12th: Transportation 1. Sugar Ray "Fly" 2. Cars "Drive" 3. Queen "Bicycle Race" 4. Avril Lavigne "Sk8er Boi" 5. Steve Miller "Threshold/Jet Airliner" 6. Proclaimers "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" 7. America "Horse With No Name" 8. Lyle Lovett "If I Had A Boat"
OK, so I skipped a day... things have gotten really busy around the JACK FM Broadcasting Complex.
First off, we're getting ready for the Big 12 Tournament at Sprint Center this Thursday - Sunday! Join JACK FM at the Miller Lite FanFest for basketball fun all weekend long! The FanFest will be located right across from the Sprint Center along 14th Street downtown.
Friday morning we'll be broadcasting JACK's Big Breakfastlive from the FanFest with food catered by Famous Dave's BBQ (!) and some great prizes to give away.
A little birdy tells me that Sister Hazel will be making an appearance on JACK FM come Friday...they will perform at KC Live as part of the Big 12 festivities Friday evening. It's a free show and open to everyone! And keep listening to win entrance to the exclusive JACK FM Soundcheck With Sister Hazel and listen for their interview/acoustic set.
As if we didn't have enough to do, we're also making plans for St. Patrick's Day. Join JACK's Big Breakfast once again live at Crossroads KCon Monday for your "Pre-Parade" festivities. Then, after the parade, join us back at Crossroads KC for great beer specials, music, a live JACK FM broadcast, and more! Check out the flier to the left!

To help set-up Tuesday's Eight Tracks, we talked this morning about a contest held by the European Space Agency to find a good playlist of 10 songs that would be sent on an IPod to the International Space Station. The winning playlist came from a 14 year old girl in Norway. I played 8 of her 10 songs, noting that she has the musical taste of my grandmother.

What is with this weather? I am sick of it! Just bring on spring already!
This weekend it's Daylight Saving Time, a complete scam if you ask me. But, don't forget to set your clocks ahead one hour this Saturday before you go to bed (or at 2am if you want to be technical about it). This wrinkle in time sparked a good Eight Tracks list for Friday:
JACK's Eight Tracks Friday March 7, 2008: Time
1. Pink Floyd "Time" 2. Huey Lewis And The News "Back In Time" 3. matchbox twenty "3 AM" 4. Culture Club "Time (Clock Of The Heart)" 5. Hootie & The Blowfish "Time" 6. Rolling Stones "Time Is On My Side" 7. Coldplay "Clocks" 8. Rocky Horror Picture Show Cast "Time Warp"
I've gotten some great lists for upcoming Eight Tracks, but keep 'em coming! Send your theme and 8 songs to: btruta@1051jackfm.com
This morning we had some comedians in studio, April Macie from Last Comic Standing will be performing at Stanford's Comedy Club at the Legends this weekend. Our VIDEO BLOG for today is extended April:
Kansas City StarTV critic Aaron Barnhardt stopped by JACK's Big Breakfast this morning to talk television and a Q&A he is putting on tonight with two local women who have struck writing gold in Hollywood.
Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Bain both graduated from Pembroke Hill High School, created and wrote the show Women's Murder Club, wrote for The Shield, and are now crafting a new series for FOX called The Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku.
Aaron will moderate this session beginning at 6:30p tonight at the Kansas City Central Library on 10th Street. It's totally free and sounds cool, so check it out!
We discussed the show Moment of Truth and played the clip where last night a woman admitted to fantasizing about players on the New York Yankees while having sex with her husband. WHAT?? It just sounded random.
Check out all of the TV dish with Aaron on today's Video Blog:
JACK's Eight Tracks Thursday March 6, 2008: Cars (for the Auto Show happening right now through Sunday at Bartle Hall)
1. Gary Numan "Cars" 2. Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen "Hot Rod Lincoln" 3. Prince "Little Red Corvette" 4. War "Low Rider" 5. Sammy Hagar "I Can't Drive 55" 6. Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe" 7. Billy Ocean "Get Outta My Dreams (And Into My Car)" 8. Grease Cast "Greased Lightnin'"
I think we're going to make Friday's Eight Tracks about time considering this weekend is Daylight Saving Time! Don't forget to set your clocks AHEAD this Saturday night!!!
JACK's Big Breakfast for Wednesday went numerous places: Hilary won 3 of 4 primaries yesterday in what "they" were calling Super Tuesday II (who are "they" anyways?), Brett Favre decided to call it a career, and tonight is some good old fashioned trash TV!
Our lifestyle correspondent Cherryh Butler from INK Magazinemade her weekly appearance to discuss all things happening around town. She was quick to pimp that Friday night is her birthday party at a secret, undisclosed location (The Granfalloon). The weekend will see some great new bars open up in the KC Livedistrict.
If you want to catch up with Cherryh and the stuff all the cool kids are doing this weekend, hit up INK's MySpace page here.
And check out Cherryh on today's VIDEO BLOG:
Both Cherryh and Jamie, our Promotions Director, were kidding me about tonight's trash TV premiere: High School Reunion on TV Land! Oh yeah! This looks right up my alley: take the Class of '87, send 'em to some tropical resort in Maui and watch the magic happen! I will be glued to my television tonight! This show was good enough to make today's Eight Tracks around.
JACK's Eight Tracks Wednesday, March 5: 1987!
1. Michael Jackson "Bad" 2. Bon Jovi "Livin' On A Prayer" 3. Whitney Houston "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" 4. U2 "With Or Without You" 5. Los Lobos "La Bamba" 6. Debbie Gibson "Only In My Dreams" 7. Whitesnake "Here I Go Again" 8. George Michael "Faith"
Remember, I'm looking for some new Eight Tracks lists! Send them to: btruta@1051jackfm.com or just use that e-mail to holler, ask questions, make snarky comments, or whatever.
The biggest thing about Super Tuesday was a fire at a tire store on Truman Road that absolutely captivated me. Maybe the dichotomy of a raging fire in 18-degree weather made me laugh. Whatever it was, it made for a good Eight Tracks.
JACK's Eight Tracks March 4, 2008: FIRE!
1. Ohio Players "Fire" 2. Nirvana "Lake Of Fire" 3. Bruce Springsteen "I'm On Fire" 4. Doors "Light My Fire" 5. Pointer Sisters "Fire" 6. Jimi Hendrix "Fire" 7. Billy Joel "We Didn't Start The Fire" 8. Bloodhound Gang "Fire Water Burn"
Remember, I'm looking for new lists...and we could be playing your Eight Tracks. Just fill out 8 songs around a theme and send them to btruta@1051jackfm.com
VIDEO BLOG!
Tomorrow our Lifestyle Correspondent Cherryh Butler is back to tell us all about the weekend's fun and what's coming up! See you for Hump Day!
This morning on JACK's Big Breakfast we helped a loyal listener.
John sent an e-mail asking for the listeners' advice: he and his wife had guests over to watch the KU/K-State game and John thought it would be a good idea to go barefoot.
While no one said a word, John's wife chided him later for not wearing shoes while guests were over. Our callers overwhelmingly sided with John, who felt no need to cover up while amongst friends. So, feel free to listen to the show barefoot, too!
JACK's Eight Tracks for Monday were all about the weather:
1. Crowded House "Weather With You"
2. Scorpions "Rock You Like A Hurricane"
3. Beatles "Here Comes The Sun"
4. Live "Lightning Crashes" 5. Red Hot Chili Peppers "Snow (Hey Oh)"
